Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics

Course times:

MSAC, Clayton and Harold Holt Starts at 8.15am Completion at 5.00pm. All other Venues Start at 8.00am Completion at 4.45pm

 

IMPORTANT To obtain the best results from this course you should complete the Part 1 Online work as advised below before the course presentation

Remember you need to also bring food, swimwear, goggles (optional, but recommended), swim cap, (Optional, but must be worn while in the water at courses at Presbyterian Ladies College, FJC Genazzano, Huntingtower School and Learn to Swim Victoria), spare towel (optional), notepad and pen

Remember we are guests of whatever location the course is held at and we are to abide by the venue rules which in ALL locations includes No Smoking

The following will be provided for you at the course; -

* The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics manual

 

Assessment Items which you are required to complete and/or forward to me after the presentation of the Course are; -

 

1 This only Applies to candidates attending a course in Australia and if you have not previously advised AUSTSWIM of this.

USI – All students enrolled into nationally recognised training must register for a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Note this is not your school student number.

A USI is a reference number that creates a secure online record of your nationally recognised training that you can access anytime, anywhere and it’s yours for life and it's free. All candidates require a USI to obtain their accreditation from AUSTSWIM.

To obtain your USI and for further information visit . http;//www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi/. If you did not include this with your application either on line or hard copy please advise your AUSTSWIM Course Provider of your USI.

 

2 This only Applies to candidates attending a course in Australia and with an Australian Postal/Physical Address. Working with Children Check (WWCC) - A copy of a Current WWCC Licence Card (Not the application or Post Office receipt) must be provided to AUSTSWIM via the Course Provider before a Licence can be issued.

To obtain one in Victoria, visit http;//www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au. If you are under 18 and you wish to obtain this Licence, when the comment regarding not requiring one comes up simply continue with your application. Some employers insist on all employees holding a current WWCC no matter what their age. You only need the Volunteer version until you are a paid employee. For AUSTSWIM licencing requirements, registered teachers can provide a current WWCC OR evidence of current VIT/QCT registration (QLD College of Teaching).

Note - Registered teachers may require a WWCC / Exemption Card if providing other regulated child-related services outside of their professional duties.

It is not necessary to have this prior to attending the course but should be provided prior to commencing Supervised Teaching Experience.


3 Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)

To be current, the CPR must have been gained within the period of issuance within the country issued (In Australia the expiry is one year) prior to the date all course requirements will be completed and may be included in a Pool or Surf Bronze, Pool Lifeguard, First Aid certificate or similar award and have been issued by a Registered Training Organisation. It is not necessary to send an original, a photo copy is enough.

Be Aware that although a First Aid Certificate may be Valid for 3 years The CPR component of it is only Valid for one year and must be updated yearly. Please note that your AUSTSWIM Licence is only current as long as your CPR is current.

It is not necessary to have this prior to attending the course but should be provided prior to commencing Supervised Teaching Experience.

 

4 Photo ID –This only applies to candidates who do not already have a photo on their AUSTSWIM Licence Card or to those who wish to change the photo, or their photo on file is over 9 years old Form 5 in the Handbook you receive at the course or/and online after the course is fully paid for. Please read the instructions carefully. Make sure the Guarantor meets the requirements as per Section 2 on the Form and they complete Section 3 and sign the back of the photo. The photo must be in colour, be clear and be easily copied by AUSTSWIM do not forget to also show the rear of the photo correctly completed,

This can be sent at anytime, however remember if this is on file when you complete all the requirements the processing time for your Licence is less., So the earlier the better.

 

5 On Line Theory Assessment

It is advisable not to use a School, University or College email address as you may forget to advise AUSTSWIM of any change when you leave, and therefore miss out on receiving reminders as to outstanding items or when renewals are due or other pertinent information.

Go to the "e-learning centre" and log in using your original email address and the password you created when you completed the Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Licence.

 

You will find at this location;

The Online Requirement with a label of ‘AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics (Part 1)’. Click on the heading You may commence any time after enrolling. It is recommended that you at least complete Modules 1 to 4 (Part 1) of the Theory Assessment prior to attending the course

The exam consists of multiple-choice questions. All questions must be answered correctly to successfully complete the exam. The exam is open book and does not need to be completed in a single sitting. You can do as much as you like each time you access it until complete.  DO NOT forget to “Submit “after the Declaration, Each Individual Module of the Theory Assessment and the Survey. Please be reminded to also complete AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics (Part 2) after the course presentation. Candidates receive instant verification upon successful completion of the exam.

The Teacher Declaration, Theory Assessment and the Course Evaluation must be completed online before the Online requirement is considered complete. You can check your “Assessment Progress via the Navigation bar on the Righthand side of the screen.

6 Supervised Teaching Experience - Forms 1 & 2 in the HandbookIt is the Candidates responsibility to find a place to complete this experience. AUSTSWIM Registered Swim Schools can be found on www.austswim.com.au  Before being eligible to be verified for teaching competence a candidate must have completed appropriate supervised teaching experience time and received advice from the supervising teacher that they are ready to have their teaching competency verified. Please note there is no set time and will depend upon each candidate as an individual based on prior experience etc. If Supervised Teaching Experience is completed under the supervision of a person who does not hold a current AUSTSWIM Licence the AUSTSWIM Insurance will not apply. If there is difficulty because of remoteness or any other reason to complete this Teaching Experience, please contact the Course provider as per this notice heading. If the venue you complete your Supervised Teaching Experience at request you do a certain time, that will be an agreement between you and the venue not AUSTSWIM. Record all your Supervised Teaching Experience on Form 2 Once enrolled and fully paid up a candidate can commence Supervised Teaching Experience but should have  a Working with Children Check and current CPR

Please note there is no set time and the time taken will depend upon each candidate as an individual based on prior experience etc. If Supervised Teaching Experience is  completed under the supervision of a person who does not hold a current AUSTSWIM Licence the AUSTSWIM Insurance will not apply. If there is difficulty because of remoteness or any other reason to complete these hours, please contact the Course provider as per this notice heading. If the venue you complete your Supervised hours at request you do a certain number of hours, that will be an agreement between you and the venue not AUSTSWIM. Record all your Supervised Teaching Experience on Form 2

 7 Verification of Teaching Competency - Form 3 in the Handbook

To be assessed on teaching competency skills by a current licenced AUSTSWIM Assessor. Refer to as above “Access to your AUSTSWIM Account /B A list of Assessors in your Area”

* Prepare 3 lesson plans appropriate to the lesson they have been allocated. (Forms 4a,4b and 4c in the Handbook)

• The lesson plans must be completed and should be planned for a duration of 30 minutes and have a minimum of 4 participants who are aged from 6 months to 5 years. The class size will vary depending on the ability of the students. Prior to commencing the verification of the teaching competence lesson, candidates must provide the assessor with these lesson plans.

The assessor is required to hold a current AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant and Pre School aquatics licence and be registered with AUSTWIM as an AUSTSWIM Assessor. A list of Assessors is available to you when you go to  www.austswim.com ,  Click e-learning Centre   on the Home page and enter your Log in details:

**It is advisable to check the currency of the Assessors Licence as an Assessment signed by an out of date Assessor will result in your assessment being returned to you. The list of Assessors is only a guide as it does not list expiry dates of those on the list or list newly accredited assessors since the date the list was prepared. Make sure this assessor is approved to assess Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics as indicated on the list.

• Where possible it is recommended that the assessor signing this form is different from the person who supervised the teaching experience hours or the person who presented the course. Note: the assessor cannot be a relative or guardian of the candidate.

• If the candidate successfully completes all the criteria to the satisfaction of the assessor the Verification of Teaching Competency Form is to be signed by an approved AUSTSWIM Assessor and returned to the candidate.

• If the candidate does not meet all the criteria they are encouraged to complete more teaching experience before presenting for re-verification.

Where a candidate has a problem meeting this requirement due to remoteness they are to contact the Course provider.

 

 

8 Micro Lesson Plans-Form 6 in Candidate Handbook

These are completed at the course and are returned to the Course Provider together with other documents as detailed below.

 

When you have completed any of the above ( Forms 2,3,4a,4b,4c,5 and 6 in the Candidate Handbook, a copy of your Current CPR and Working With Children Check (WWCC)) you can email to etullber@bigpond.net.au Please Label each attachment with First Name, Last Name, and content (handbook, Cpr, etc)

All Assessment Items MUST be completed within one year from the date of the commencement of the Course presentation                                        

 PLEASE NOTE

Before Licences are issued, they go through an audit process which can take up to 5 days. You should receive an email from AUSTSWIM when your Licence is issued, if your photo is already on file this will usually be within a week unless holidays interfere, and the Licence is posted shortly after.

Allow a longer time frame if outside of Australia. You should receive an email from AUSTSWIM when your Licence is issued, and the Licence is posted shortly after.

If you have received an email from AUSTSWIM and your Licence has not arrived within 14 days, contact AUSTSWIM on 1300 885 666

If you have not received an email from AUSTSWIM or your Licence within 30 days, please contact me. Please do not contact me before this time.

  It is your interest to retain a copy of ALL forms sent at least until you receive your Licence

The following will be completed at the Course; -

1 Practical Assessment Swimming Competencies

This assessment is designed to assess the candidate’s ability to perform rescue techniques and an Aquatic Sequence.

Practical assessment is to be conducted during the presentation of the theory and practical components of the course.

A Continuous Aquatic Sequence

To determine candidates are comfortable and confident in an aquatic environment, the candidate is required to complete a Continuous Aquatic Sequence comprising of:

• Enter the water with an appropriate, feet first entry

• Float, scull or tread water for 1 to 2 minutes with feet off the bottom of the pool

• Fully submerge and swim underwater for 2 to 5 metres and re-surface

• Swim 40 to 50 metres on the front with face in water (displaying comfortable breathing technique)

• Rotate or roll onto back

• Swim 40 to 50 metres on the back

• Exit the water appropriately

It is to be noted that this is to be completed as one continuous sequence without rest stops.

 

2 Practical Demonstration of Teaching Skills

This activity is designed to assess the candidate’s ability to demonstrate for teaching purposes specific teaching of infant and preschool aquatic activities. The method of assessment is Role play

Assessment guidelines

i This activity is to occur during the practical components of the course presentation

ii Candidates are required to prepare a variety of micro-lesson plans and instruct to a small group of candidates a minimum of:

. Module 5: 1 micro-lesson

. Module 6: 2 micro-lessons

iii the micro-lesson templates found at the back of this Candidate Handbook are to be utilised for this activity. The Course Presenter will select which skill is to be instructed to the group from the prepared lesson plans.

iv the micro-lesson plans are to be planned over a variety of the developmental stages and cover the skills and developmental implications as listed on the lesson plan templates.

REFUND and CANCELLATION POLICY

*Notification must be made no less than 48 hours prior to the commencement of a course if you wish to cancel or transfer your enrolment.

* If no notice is given prior to the course then the candidate will forfeit the right to a refund or transfer. 

*Refunds will incur an administration fee of 20% of the enrolment fee. Transfers will incur an administration fee of 10% of the enrolment fee.

*In the event of the course being cancelled by AUSTSWIM or the Provider due to insufficient enrolments, candidates will be offered a full refund or may elect to transfer to another course without penalty. Fees will be waived if a medical certificate is provided

*The enrolment fee includes all course requirements and resources and Insurance coverage while undertaking the Course and post course on the job requirements and once AUSTSWIM Accreditation for the training course is issued up to the expiry date (Conditions apply) but excludes CPR certification and photo identification.
